Did you know Los Angeles has it’s own Comic book Convention?
Yeah, me neither…!
But about a month ago, I was reading the L.A. Weekly and saw a tiny ad for something called the “Los Angeles Comic Book & Scifi Convention.”
I was surprised at how small the ad was – I figured since Comicon is such a big thing in San Diego that L.A. would have something just as huge that I just didn’t hear about until now, but when I got there, I wasn’t even sure if I had the right place. I asked the guard at a parking garage and he stared at me for a moment as if he didn’t know what I was talking about.
Fortunately, we (me and Tessa) were in the right place.
After the initial disappointment of it not being a bigger event wore off, I began to realize how cool it was being there. One of the things that I never understood about Comicon was how some TV shows were invited / had panels when they didn’t even have a comic series. (ex. Lost) This felt more like a true comic convention, without all the posers and “pretenders” who claim to be nerds but really aren’t.
Seriously you wannabes – that’s OUR word. Go be cool somewhere else.
We pretty much spent all day there, looking through the various bins of (cheap) comics; it takes a lot of time to go through a whole auditorium of the stuff…..and a lot of it was either garbage, or something I already owned. (Been collecting since I was twelve, you know!)
And can you imagine what *I* think is garbage, when I paid good money for titles like these??

The U.S. clones Jesus to save the world from a vampire Apocalypse.
(Completely serious)
Picks up right where "KISS meets the Phantom at the Park" takes off
- the bandmembers of KISS are supernatural beings. After we ran out of cash, we took one last look through all the booths to “window shop” and got to talking with some of the people at the booths….and apparently, they throw this convention every month!
EVERY MONTH.
No wonder it was so poorly advertised…..this convention is old hat!
Unfortunately, the recession has affected this trend lately and the L.A. comic book & sci-fi convention will not be around next month (October). It also was not around last month (August) or even the month before that. (July) With the economy the way it is, the people who put this on just aren’t making enough money to run the convention on a monthly basis when there are yearly events like Comicon & the West Hollywood Book Fair competing against them.
But hey, at least we don’t have to wait until next year to go looking for the mysterious Hellen Keller comic I've heard so much about……!
